OEHM Nxumalo

Image Otty Ezrom Howard Mandlakayise Nxumalo was born in 1938 in Louwsburg, KwaZulu-Natal and currently lives in Durban, a coastal city in the same province. He has degrees from the University of South Africa, the University of Zululand and Harvard University.

An esteemed academic, Nxumalo has taught at various institutions including the Governor's school of New Jersey, Lesley College, Harvard University and the University of Zululand. With his expertise in the field of education, Nxumalo has also contributed widely, in a number of positions, to education in the KwaZulu-Natal province. He also served as Director General of the Province of KwaZulu-Natal from 1994 to 2000.

Nxumalo's publications include novels, books of poetry, a number of short stories and an authorised biography of King Goodwill Zwelithini. His novels are Ikusasa Alaziwa, Izinsizwa Ngamakhosi, and Ngisinga Empumalanga.

Nxumalo has also contributed to a number of readers and language guides and has to his credit several published scholarly papers, mostly around the subject of education.

Nxumalo's poetry is inspired by themes such as nature, love, sympathy, sorrow, triumph, resilience, and fortitude. His short stories, essays and novels are driven by his observational interest in people and human behaviour, often revealed in the form of strong social and political statements.
